National Hobby Month
January is quickly approaching, which means a new year full of new opportunities and so much potential for a ‘new’ you! Since 1987, January has been known as the National Hobby Month due to the increased popularity of New Year’s resolutions and the drive to begin something fresh going into the new year. Your Source Ortho team is challenging you to discover a hobby this January 2020! If you are looking for a new hobby to take with you into the New Year, look no further, Source Ortho has got you covered.
Cardio is our favorite exercise and provides so many health benefits including intense calorie burn, which results in the burning of excess fat. It also aids in making your heart stronger, increases your lung capacity, and works to reduce the risk of heart attack, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, Type 2 Diabetes, and even some forms of cancer (not to mention the stress relief you receive through exercise).
Because of all the health benefits you receive through cardio, it is perhaps the most important form of exercise you will find. Cardio is incredibly versatile and can include any exercises ranging from long 10 mile runs to simple 10 minute walks around the neighborhood. Our suggestions for exercising with cardio is to find something that you enjoy doing and what you can see yourself doing at least three times a week. If you do something you enjoy, you will find that you will not be dragging your feet to do it.
Another helpful tip for your exercise is to be flexible with your exercise routine; do not beat yourself up if you miss a day or two, just keep moving forward. Lastly, keep it simple and take it slow; taking your exercise one day at a time and building your exercises as you go will keep you from feeling burnt out from your exercise.
While discussing cardio, we cannot forget to add our favorite products to assist you in finding your hobby. Source Fitness offers all you could ever need for the perfect cardio workout. This includes everything from our Weighted Speed Jump Rope Star Trac 8-TRX Coach Treadmill. If you want to start slower and with less impact, try our compact elliptical Cubii Pro, which is compact and lightweight and also features Bluetooth capability that connects to the Cubii mobile app and can also sync to Fitbit and Apple Health Kit. If you are looking for a cardio machine that can also increase your arm and leg strength, check out the Spirit Fitness CRW800 Rower which is easy on the body and easy to use.
Strength training is also great to build lean muscle and to lose weight. While it does burn fewer calories than cardio, the combination of both cardio and strength training makes for the perfect workout regimen and calorie burn! While cardio works towards improving cardiovascular function, strength training works to build up your muscles through resistance training and aids in building stronger and healthier bones. To add to this, the more muscle mass you have, the more calories you tend to burn on average, making strength training a must during this National Hobby Month!
Starting with strength training can be painful and a little daunting, to say the least. Just like we mentioned while discussing cardio, the best way to stick with any hobby (especially when it comes to exercise) is to take it slow and find exercises and weights that work best for you; do not just jump into an exercise and expect immediate results. The greatest thing about weight training is the ability to measure your progress through increased weight and reps as you go along. Because of this, the products we sell are specifically geared for you and your progress.
Take our Body Sport Neoprene Dumbbell set, for example, which comes in a variety of weights so you can gradually increase your weight as you become more and more proficient and you can pick and choose which weights work best for your needs. Or perhaps you are looking for barbells for a more traditional lifting workout like our Body-Solid Olympic Weight Bar. If you are looking for even lighter resistance training, our resistance bands are absolutely perfect for beginning your resistance/strength training or for exercising with an injury or post-op. All of those resistance bands come in different strengths, which also aids you in results based on your progress.
Going into a new year, and a new decade, can seem intimidating and stressful, but you should be celebrating another year and another month to be able to embark on a journey of discovering new hobbies. Whether you are new to the fitness game, or an avid exercise enthusiast, Source Ortho has everything you need to pursue your best self and to find a hobby that is just right for you!
